How My Computer Freaked Out At Work

by Jon Pinney on October 24, 2009

This is what happened yesterday when I was working.  I was in the middle of showing one of my employees what to do on a project we were working on when my computer started thinking really slow and I got the first notification of a security risk to my computer.  Then I got another one.  That’s when I called one of my tech guys to come and look at it.  While he was trying to fix it my computer just freaked out and started going crazy.  Luckily my quick reflexes allowed me to grab my cell phone and capture the pandemonium :)   This is what my computer screen looked like.  This would be hilarious if it hadn’t been my computer and if it hadn’t kept me from working the entire day…

My Historic Photographic Trip Through New York City

by Jon Pinney on October 15, 2009

I recently went to New York City to help my sister move apartments.  While not my first time there, it definitely had some of my most memorable New York City moments.  Carrying mattresses, desks, and other random household items through the financial district (by Wall Street and Broadway) was definitely one of them.  The others however all had to do with the historic sites I was able to visit.

First things first, I visited my sister at work.  She’s an Associate Producer with National Geographic.  Here we are in her office:

The first historic place I visited was the World Trade Center plaza.  The big empty space behind me is where the twin towers used to stand.  It’s crazy to think that only two buildings took up that entire space, and that they fell…

The following morning my sister and I went to Liberty Island.  While on the way, I came across this monument titled “The Sphere.”  I cried.

It was originally a monument to World Peace at the World Trade Center plaza.  The remains of this monument were salvaged and placed in Battery Park.  Below is the plaque that describes the monument.  There was also a flame in front of the monument that isn’t pictured.

When we arrived to buy tickets to Liberty Island, there was no one in line.  It was 8 am on a Friday morning–the perfect time to buy tickets to and visit the Statue of Liberty.  We were early enough to avoid the huge line, but not too early to stand in line with the early birds (who were all already waiting inside to get on the ferry).  We got on the first ferry out to the island.  I took a lot of pictures.

As we got closer to the Statue of Liberty, my sis took a picture of me and Lady Liberty.

She is such a beautiful statue.  I seriously took about 100 pictures of her.  Here are some of my favorites…

After climbing up into the Statue of Liberty and all around the base and taking a bazillion photos, we hopped back onto the ferry and headed back to NYC.  I can see why the idea of The Statue of Liberty had such an amazing effect on the people coming to America.  Below is one of the quotes I saw in the museum of someone who had recently arrived in New York early last century.

Overall this trip was a lot of fun.  I was really glad to be able to see my sister and also many of the historic sites in New York City.  As a final picture, this was one I took somewhere on 6th Avenue (I think).  I put the camera on a mailbox and had it take the picture of us.  My sister kept telling me the camera would get stolen, but I had faith in the good people of New York City that they wouldn’t take it.  Plus I figured I could run as fast as any of them.

My Blog And What I Blog

by Jon Pinney on October 6, 2009

Blogging is fun but also very time consuming.

Lately I’ve decided that if I’m going to continue blogging I need to change it up a little.  I’m going to focus on music.  I’ll still write about my life and other stuff that’s going on, but it will be less frequent.

I’ve announced a new album, and I’ve begun writing a lot of new music.  I think I’m going to blog about the songs I’m writing and show you bits and pieces of them as I bring them along.  I will also put up videos and even have downloads at times.

Music is one of my favorite forms of expression, and I feel like I’ve got a lot to express.  Hopefully this change will be one you enjoy.

My Photographic Walk Through Chicago

by Jon Pinney on September 22, 2009

This evening I decided to take a walk through the city.  I think it’s supposed to rain again tomorrow so I figured this would be my best opportunity.  I brought my camera with me and decided it would be fun to document my walk.

Here I am at the beginning of my walk, still in the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown.  I’m about to get on the elevator.

Here I am about to enter the elevator

Here I am about to enter the elevator

From right outside the hotel I had a beautiful view of the Chicago River, Michigan Avenue Bridge, and these two historic buildings.  The one on the left is the Wrigley Building.  The one on the right is the Tribune Tower.

The Wrigley Building (on the left) and the Chicago Tribune Tower (on the right)

When I reached the side of the bridge, I noticed some stairs that went down.  As I descended I found my first spot for a self-portrait.  You’ll notice I found lots of these spots…

Right around the corner from here (directly under the bridge) I found my second spot for a self-portrait.  Keep in mind that I’m here in this city by myself.  I wanted to be in pictures to remind me of where I was (plus pictures are much more exciting with people in them).

Under the Michigan Avenue Bridge

After I crossed under the bridge and tried a few more self-portraits, I went back up top and crossed over the bridge.  On my way I took a blurry picture of the Chicago River and the buildings on each side of it (it was really pretty but the picture didn’t turn out).  Then there was a guy playing a drum and singing.  Another guy was taking a picture, so I took a picture of him taking a picture (not shown here).  Then I walked down Michigan Avenue, also known as “The Magnificent Mile” at this point because of all the shopping etc.  Here is a picture of me and the Magnificent Mile :)

You may have noticed by now that I haven’t been smiling.  It’s funny how you don’t often think of smiling when you’re taking a picture of yourself.  I didn’t really notice till after that all of the pictures were so serious.  I actually had a great time and lots of fun.

While looking for more cool spots for self-portraits, I ran into Mike.  He was from somewhere near the slums and wanted to share some Positive Poetry with me.  It was pretty cool.  After I asked if I could take a picture with him.  I liked his glasses.

After wandering for another 15 minutes or so, I eventually found myself at a bus stop.  Here I am waiting…

Here I am waiting for the bus

Here I am waiting for the bus

While there I noticed the advertisement at the bus stop echoed the sentiments I was feeling for my friends and family.

Meet me out here

Join me out here

After waiting for the bus (which never showed up), I decided to continue my walk.  I found myself in a beautiful garden with a bunch of yellow lights.  It was really cool.  The lights were very dim and created a surreal ambience.  It was very calming, so of course I decided to take a picture…

Me in the Garden of Light

When in such as a place as the Garden of Light, you can’t help but begin to think of the mysteries of the universe…  I got so caught up in one those mysteries that I had to take a moment to contemplate.  So I parked myself on this bench and began to consider:  why are these the only lights that are out?

Me contemplating the mysteries of universe

At this point, I’m getting tired of my walk through town.  I’ve taken a bunch of pictures, and am satisfied with what I’ve seen. Chicago is a beautiful city, and I have enjoyed visiting her each time I’ve had the opportunity.  Luckily, my path took me in a big circle and I was nearing my hotel.  As I was about to arrive, I found a final self-portrait location.  It was another Garden of Lights, though this time it was hanging :)   After waiting for tons of people to clear out (so I could get a good shot), I finally took my favorite photo of the evening.

After this I was home free and only about 100 feet from my final destination… my hotel.  I hope you have enjoyed My Photographic Walk Through Chicago.  I know I did :)   As a final goodbye, I leave you with a bonus photo.  Enjoy!

Volleyball and Future Travels

by Jon Pinney on September 18, 2009

It is late and I need to go to bed.  I am already past midnight on a Thursday night, but just barely.  I’m going to post this and then be asleep.

Tonight I had so much fun–but it also left me exhausted.  I played volleyball for 3-4 hours straight.  It was a great workout, and I met a lot of new people and played with some friends.  I have always enjoyed playing volleyball, and I was recently introduced to two open adult volleyball nights.  One is in Roseville and the other in Antelope.  Then after that I went and played at the Church volleyball night for single adults.  The combination of the two left me starving and wanting to pass out. :)

Hopefully these volleyball nights will enter my weekly plans and give me some good help towards the six pack abs…

Here is a video that we took tonight… If you look close you can see me and Ty setting and spiking the ball into some other people’s faces… It was quite enjoyable.

On another note, I will be traveling in the not-to0-distant future.  I will be heading to Lake Tahoe for a day.  Then I’ll be heading to Chicago for a work conference.  Then I’ll be heading to New York City to help my sister move apartments.

While traveling is fun, I wish I could spread out some of these trips a little more.  Once I am back from New York City, I will be very glad. :)

Anyway, just wanted to give you an update on my life.  I am now going to bed.

9/11 Tribute Videos. Where I was. Where were you?

by Jon Pinney on September 11, 2009

Since it is now officially the 8th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, I decided I would include a Tribute post.  I started looking through YouTube to find appropriate videos and soon found myself crying, in shock, in awe, and biting my nails as I waited to see again the second collision.  Knowing it would happen only made it worse.

On 9/11/2001 I was serving a mission for my church in the Dominican Republic.  I remember exactly where I was when I found out something had happened in America.  My companion and I couldn’t get good information until we went to a member’s house and turned on CNN.  That’s when I saw what had happened.  We watched and rewatched the footage over and over.  It was surreal.  I wish I could’ve been here in America when it happened.  I’ve been told that American Flags were displayed everywhere and that the Nation was completely United.

I was only going to include one video, but I couldn’t find just one that had everything I wanted to share.  So, I’ve included many.  Watch whichever ones you want, just make sure and remember.

If you can, please leave a comment with where you were and what you were doing that day.  You can include any feelings you had as well.

Labor Day: Lots of Fun. Little Labor.

by Jon Pinney on September 8, 2009

Happy Labor Day! :)

Today was an awesome day.  I slept in.

Then I got up and headed over to my parent’s house to go swimming.  I invited some friends over, and we had a nice enjoyable day by the pool.

The best part was when one of them pulled out the camera… We started taking a ton of crazy pictures.  I’ve included some of my favorites here.  I hope you enjoy.

And finally the women attacked us.

At this point, we decided it was time to do something else.  We went and ate at Quizno’s (I got the Turkey Bacon Guacamole… yum) and then headed to my place for smoothies, a movie, and a nap.  The movie we chose:  Far and Away–with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.  I have to say that’s one of my favorite movies, though it is really long.  We thought we’d take a nap while watching the movie (there were 8 of us) though I don’t think anyone ever fell asleep.

My favorite line and moment from the movie…  Joseph (Tom Cruise) says to Stephen (Thomas Gibson) right after he throws him from his horse into the river:  “We’re not in Ireland anymore, you arrogant bastard.”

The New Head(er Image) of JonPinney.com

by Jon Pinney on September 3, 2009

After hours of trying to figure it out, I finally put a header image at the top of my site.  I’d love to know what you think about it.  Please leave a comment with your thoughts.

The image was taken by Jenny Ellen, with cropping and photoshopping by yours truly.  :)

Sometimes I think developers write code specifically to annoy people like me (who don’t know what we’re doing).  I finally figured out that all I was missing was renaming a file.  Every site I went to for instructions failed to include that piece or how to do it.  Luckily (after hours of guessing and PG cursing) I got it right.

The following instructions are for anyone who is trying to add hooks to your Thesis blog theme.  You must do the following before any custom functions will work.

You need to rename the “custom-sample” folder to “custom”.  Check your Thesis Options/Design Customizations/Custom Stylesheet.  There may be a warning suggesting that you need to rename the “custom-sample” folder to “custom” for any custom functions or CSS to work.

You can’t do this from the WordPress admin section (at least I couldn’t figure out how).  I ended up going to BlueHost (my web hosting company), signing on to my account, accessing cPanel, clicking on File Manager (under Files).  Then I selected “Home Directory”.  When the file manager opens up, you have to expand the “www” folder, then the “wp-content” folder, then the “themes” folder, then click on “thesis_151″.  On the right side of the window, click on ”custom-sample”, then click on “rename” above.  That will open a window where you can rename the file as “custom”.  Once you’ve done that, all of the hooks you’re trying to get working should be good to go.  Don’t waste hours of unnecessary time trying to figure this out (like I did).

Hopefully that will help others struggling to solve the problem I was having.  To everyone else, sorry for the technical description.  I’d still love to know what you think of the image.  :)

Not Enough Time to Conquer The World

by Jon Pinney on July 12, 2009

It’s 3 am and I should be sleeping…

Why do I always feel like there’s never enough time?  A friend told me recently that we really only have time for one extra-curricular activity… For him it’s the gym.  For me, it switches back and forth.  I should be spending more time promoting my music, but for some reason other things always get in the way.

For example, my full-time job; volleyball on Thursdays; racquetball Wednesdays; gym every day; the lake some days; hanging out with friends most days; Church on Sunday; sleep every night; and who can forget the current book that I’m reading?  I can’t–especially since my brother reminds me that he is waiting for me to finish it so he can start it.

Do you ever feel like you are bigger than the world you live in?  Do you ever feel like you are meant for greater things?

I totally feel that way.  And yet, I think that I am the biggest obstacle to achieving those greater things.

I recently told myself that I was going to stop being a child.  Children flit around and do whatever they want.  They have no care in the world.  They have no responsibility.  They have a ton of fun but rarely achieve any great things.

That’s how I feel I’ve been for the last few years.  I’ve had a great time, but I haven’t affected the world as I wish I could.

I used to pray that God would give me the pain of others so they wouldn’t have to suffer.  I have since realized that that is a selfish desire.  It is through pain and suffering that we grow stronger.  By taking other people’s pain, I’d be taking from them the opportunity to grow and become stronger.

While I have not always enjoyed the struggles I have in my life, I have always tried to be thankful for them.  They have made me who I am and helped me to sculpt myself into the man I want to be, and the man God knows I can be.

Anyway, it’s late and I should be tired, but I’m not.  My heart is full and my mind is alert.  I feel like I can change the world–if only my voice could be heard.

If you read this, I hope you recognize how amazing you are.  I may not know you personally, but I really feel like every person I have ever met has the potential to be brilliant and amazing.  I hope you can see that in yourself.

Well, my thoughts continue but my fingers feel like they’ve written enough.  If you get a chance, check out my friend Catherine Papworth.  She’s got a great voice and writes beautiful music.

Wow.  I just read through this post and I seem to have wandered much as I typed.  Hope you enjoy it anyway.
